Beer of the Week

Beer(s) of the Week – Black Hops Brewing

We visited the Black Hops II venue at Biggera Waters this weekend. It’s a great venue, located in their newer brewing site, and has a casual, industrial vibe, with 13 taps, food trucks AND it’s doggo friendly (we met a beautiful Boxer who wouldn’t stay still for a photo). Brodie and I both had a tasting paddle, so the Beer of the Week is actually Beers of the Week!

Brewery: Black Hops Brewing

Beer Name: Pink Mist
Style: Raspberry Saison
Size: Taster
Alc/Vol: 4.7%
Grain: Australian Barley & Wheat
Hops: Citra & Nelson Sauvin
Yeast: French Saison
Additions: Raspberry

Thoughts: I liked this more than I expected – I’ve had some great saisons and some terrible ones, so I’m always cautious. But this was nice, it had a light raspberry flavour, and a slightly sweet after taste, and was very drinkable.

Rating (out of 5): 🍺🍺🍺 and a half

Beer Name: Trolly’d in Tijuana (GABS Beer 2018)
Style: Sangria Saison
Size: Taster
Alc/Vol: 6.5%
Additions: Cinnamon, Orange Peel, & Star Anise

Thoughts: This was unexpected. The first sip was a lot. I got a lot of the orange peel, a bit of the star anise, and not very much cinnamon (which is good, because I loathe cinnamon). It was nice after the initial surprise – it’s very flavourful & very tasty, but I could only have a small one of these guys.

Rating (out of 5): 🍺🍺🍺

Beer Name: Assault Trifle (GABS Beer 2016)
Style: Pale Ale
Size: Taster
Alc/Vol: 6.1%
Additions: Aeroplane Jelly, Toasted Coconut, Cream Sherry, Madagascan Vanilla Beans, & Sponge Cake

Thoughts: Well shit me. This is legit a carbonated trifle. It was sweet-ish but not sticky. It was like having a mouthful of #aeroplanejelly & toasted coconut, with a lovely vanilla finish.

Rating (out of 5): 🍺🍺🍺 and a half

Beer Name: Kill Patrick (GABS Beer 2015)
Style: Oyster Stout
Size: Taster
Alc/Vol: 5.3%
Additions: Tweed River Oysters, Tamarind, Clove, Pepper, & Lemon Zest

Thoughts: I LOVED this. I’m a sucker for an oyster stout. It was smoky & a little briney – but not too much. It had a mellow after taste, smoky, but smooth. It was a really solid stout, and my favourite beer of the paddle. I would order this by the pint!

Rating (out of 5): 🍺🍺🍺🍺
